With over 25 years of extrusion experience, Gene Brown Extrusion Techniques is celebrating our second year in business. GBET is a Florida-based company providing employee training as well as a wide range of industry insight which includes hands on working knowledge of multiple extrusion processes: Industrial & Automotive Tubing, Wire & Cable, Medical Tubing, Extrusion Die Design and Development, Flow Analysis, Die Design Improvements, and Sheathing of various substrates.

Gene Brown Extrusion Techniques is built on extrusion, people, and processes with a commitment to helping customers achieve lasting success That mindset is what led me to start Gene Brown Extrusion Techniques. At GBET, the goal is simple: listen carefully, understand the customer’s needs and limits, and then help build the right solution. Sometimes that means training. Sometimes it means equipment selection. Sometimes it means process improvement or product development. Whatever the need, the starting point is always the same — a conversation, good questions, and a clear understanding of what success looks like.

  • A first for GBET last year was the design and build of a multiple plate profile die, with dry sizing calibration plates for a PVC coextrusion product designed as an electrical wire tray.

  • Multiple first-time customers kept us busy. One request that was repeated by several entrepreneurs was to conduct various types of due diligence for them to step in the world of manufacturing of various wire and cable products.

  • Thanks to Mr. John Doughtery of DS for his time and assistance with a product development project consisting of a core insulated with multiple thermoplastic layers and a final jacket of fluoropolymer. The kickers; the core was 0.750” with a final diameter of 2.1”, the entire construction is to completed in one pass, and each reel had to be 3 miles in length.

With continuous extrusion, success depends on far more than the extruder alone. Auxiliary equipment, tooling, raw materials, equipment condition, operating practices, and the knowledge and skill of the people running the process all influence productivity and quality.

The questions are simple: What are the constraints? What can be changed? And what must be managed as it is?

I began my career in 1979 on the plant floor of a local building wire manufacturer, where I quickly developed an appreciation for both the extrusion process and the teamwork required to achieve production goals. I went on to work with three additional cable manufacturers before moving into technical sales and eventually managing the R&D laboratory for a tool and die company specializing in extrusion tooling and smaller extruders.

Over more than 40 years, I have worked with a broad range of thermoplastics, extrusion processes, tooling, and equipment. My experience has also provided a perspective from virtually every level of the operation—from extruder operator and quality control to production scheduling, floor management, process engineering, R/D and operations management.

That experience has taught me to look beyond the immediate problem. Whether the issue involves equipment, tooling, materials, process conditions, or production practices, the objective is to understand the entire system, identify the root cause, and develop a practical solution.

From a ½-inch extruder processing less than a pound per hour to 6- and 8-inch machines producing thousands of pounds per hour, the fundamentals remain the same: extrusion is about managing a pump and optimizing the system around it.

Extrusion is a trade—a combination of science, experience, and art.

OVER TWENTY FIVE YEARS OF EXTRUSION EXPERIENCE

Hands on experience with multiple applications involving the continuous extrusion process of thermoplastic materials. Applications: Single Extrusion, Tandem Extrusion and Co-Extrusions including a variety of multilayer set-ups including five layers.

My skill set is quite diverse and includes hands on working knowledge of multiple extrusion processes including, Industrial & Automotive Tubing, Wire & Cable, Medical Tubing, Extrusion Die Design and Development, Flow Analysis, Die Design Improvements, and Sheathing of various substrates.

How do I improve your facility or process? With an excellent working knowledge of thermoplastic materials and the auxiliary equipment required to complete the system for the process, I accomplish projects timely and accurately.

A lot has changed since 1979. New technology has made the production easier and the machinery better. Many products that had multiple processes can now be done in just one pass. So what’s missing?

I feel what is lacking today is critical thinking and people skills. There’s far more information available, and that’s good, but I don’t see the same widespread desire by employees in many plants to want to understand a process. When things go bad, which is inevitable. it’s time to work with your colleagues to figure out what’s wrong, and how to make it right. To get that line running again. That’s what we specialized in long ago.
