Celebrating Five Years of GBET - Gene Brown Extrusion Techniques

A Journey of Resilience and Growth

As we mark the fifth anniversary of Gene Brown Extrusion Techniques (GBET), I reflect on the incredible journey we’ve had since our inception in 2019. It all began with a pivotal moment of receiving the first purchase order and opportunity. Five years ago, to this day, I drove to Miami to catch a flight to Santiago in the Dominican Republic. Special thanks to Orlando Martinez, then with Davis Standard, for your unwavering faith and confidence, and to the International Wire Association for giving us a platform in your September periodical.

In September of 2019, just three weeks after starting the business, I faced a significant health challenge that left me confined to a wheelchair before transitioning to using a walker. This experience taught me never to take anything for granted. Navigating through the abyss of darkness made me a stronger person and built resilience. Despite these challenges, GBET persevered, accepting jobs and achieving a successful start. By the end of the year, I had relearned how to walk, both physically and mentally, and was back on my feet.

In 2020, my condition was diagnosed as an autoimmune disease, and I began receiving monthly infusions. With the COVID-19 lockdown in place and minimal business opportunities, this year became one of healing. Despite sending out only one invoice for the entire year, I was blessed with the opportunity to write an article for an industrial periodical, which kept me engaged and later opened doors for new opportunities.

In 2021, as the world began to reopen, I seized opportunities to travel when others hesitated. This flexibility and coverage in an industrial periodical that featured consultants in the wire and cable industry helped us forge new paths.

By 2022, movement became easier with the easing of individual and governmental health restrictions. It was our first full year of embracing new opportunities, and GBET thrived.

The year 2023 was bustling, taking us to three countries and twelve states, working across multiple disciplines and products. We expanded our expertise in the extrusion of pipe, profile, tubing, irrigation hose, wire, brake lines, and other specialty products for industries such as medical, automotive, construction, electronics, building products, and robotics.

As 2024 unfolds, we’ve started with a bang, receiving calls from China and multiple states in Mexico and the US. This year promises to be one of continued growth and success.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey.

In any era, the people matter

Inspiring employees never goes out of style

Gene’s story of his early days or learning the wire and cable industry – where the driving focus was “keeping the line running” – can be seen as a tale of a past era. He notes that even as the technology continues to evolve, some aspects of what mattered most decades ago still applies for a simple reason: the people working on the shop floor are important.

Hold the line

Don't let your line run you

A lot has changed since 1979. New technology has made the production easier and the machinery better. Many products that had multiple processes can now be done in just one pass. So what’s missing?

I feel what is lacking today is critical thinking and people skills. There’s far more information available, and that’s good, but I don’t see the same widespread desire by employees in many plants to want to understand a process. When things go bad, which is inevitable. it’s time to work with your colleagues to figure out what’s wrong, and how to make it right. To get that line running again. That’s what we specialized in long ago.
